Nigeria Premier Football League side Rivers United F.C. were involved in a road accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for their President’s Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United.

The club confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the accident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed from its camp.

According to the statement, some players and officials sustained minor injuries, but no fatalities or life-threatening conditions were recorded.

“We wish to inform our supporters, stakeholders and the general public that the team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for the President’s Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United,” the club said.

It added that the health and safety of players and officials remain the club’s top priority, confirming that all affected persons are receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.

Rivers United also expressed appreciation for the support and concern shown by fans and the wider football community, adding that further updates on the team’s travel arrangements and the fixture would be communicated in due course.

The Port Harcourt-based club had secured a place in the Round of 16 after a 3-2 victory over Rangers International and were scheduled to face Nasarawa United in Awka.

The Federation Cup remains their only realistic chance of silverware this season after finishing second in the league, just one point behind champions Rangers International.
