Rivers United humiliated 4-1 by Pyramids FC, CAF CL hopes end
The NPFL leaders remain bottom of Group A with just one point, having lost all three home matches and failing to win any of their five group-stage games.
Rivers United’s slim hopes of progressing from the CAF Champions League group stage were extinguished on Sunday as they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Pyramids FC at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The NPFL leaders had initially taken the lead through Stephen Manyo’s 33rd-minute strike, smashing an indirect free-kick past goalkeeper Mahmoud Gad. Rivers United went into halftime protecting that advantage.
However, the second half belonged entirely to the reigning CAF Champions League holders. Pyramids FC equalised just seven minutes after the restart through Mostafa Fathy, before Marwan Hamdi converted a penalty following Ochobe Elias’ handball to give the Egyptians the lead.
The Port Harcourt side’s resistance collapsed late as Ode Al Fakhouri extended the visitors’ lead in the 88th minute, and Nasser Maher sealed the emphatic victory with a stoppage-time goal.
Rivers United now finish bottom of Group A with just one point from five matches, having lost all three home games and failing to register a single group-stage win.
