Sokoto Senator Ibrahim Lamido resigns from APC over insecurity

The senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing worsening insecurity and hardship faced by his constituents.

Lamido announced his resignation on Saturday via his official X account, stating that the decision takes immediate effect.

“I, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing the good people of Sokoto East Senatorial District, hereby resign from the APC with immediate effect,” he said.

The lawmaker explained that his decision was driven by what he described as the party’s inability to adequately protect lives and address the challenges facing his constituents.

“My decision is based on the party’s failure to safeguard the people I represent and the hardship currently being faced by them. This defection is primarily in the interest of the people I represent,” he added.

Lamido, however, did not disclose his next political destination.

He had earlier raised concerns over persistent insecurity in Sokoto East, lamenting that several communities have been ravaged by bandit attacks, leading to displacement and destruction of livelihoods.

According to him, repeated efforts to draw federal attention to the crisis yielded little response, prompting consultations with stakeholders and community leaders, who supported his decision to leave the ruling party.

“My people are enduring untold hardship. Bandits have destroyed entire communities, and I cannot remain in a system that has failed to demonstrate sufficient commitment to resolving this crisis,” he stated.

The senator emphasised that his move was motivated by the need to align with the concerns of his constituents rather than personal political ambition. He also called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle banditry and restore peace in Sokoto State and other affected regions.

His resignation adds to the growing list of political realignments across the country as stakeholders reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
