BREAKING: I will support any candidate that emerges ADC Presidential candidate – Atiku
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has declared his readiness to support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking in an interview with DW Hausa, Atiku, a presidential aspirant on the ADC platform, said party unity would be prioritised after the primaries.
“We will support and endorse whoever emerges as the flag bearer,” he said, noting that internal contests are part of democratic practice.
Atiku also dismissed concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could undermine the ADC, despite the electoral body’s recent decision to halt communication with the party’s leadership and decline monitoring of its planned national convention.
INEC had based its action on a court ruling, a move the ADC has rejected, insisting it would proceed with its scheduled convention and other activities.
The former Vice-President attributed the party’s current challenges to its rising influence, alleging that vested interests were uncomfortable with its growing popularity nationwide.
He emphasised that the ADC is youth-driven, highlighting the increasing participation of young people and women across all levels of political aspiration within the party.
“The youths have taken over the party. Most of those seeking elective positions… are young people,” he said, adding that the party remains committed to inclusion.
Atiku also affirmed his willingness to support a younger presidential candidate if one emerges.
“Yes, why not,” he said, stressing the importance of securing the future for younger generations.
Expressing optimism about the 2027 elections, he said Nigerians are eager for change due to worsening economic and security conditions.
“We are confident that Nigerians are yearning for change. They are ready for it,” he said.
Atiku further linked rising insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria, to youth unemployment and poor access to education, urging greater investment in human capital development.
He also accused the government of tolerating corruption, alleging that mismanagement and lack of accountability have contributed to the country’s current challenges.
The remarks come amid heightened political activity and realignments as parties and aspirants begin positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
