Troops of the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army have arrested 14 people suspected of posing as officials of the Nigeria Forest Guard while allegedly carrying out illegal arrest operations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Security sources revealed that the suspects were arrested around 5:20 p.m. on June 5 by soldiers from the 7 Guards Battalion during a routine patrol in the Mpape area of Bwari Area Council.

According to the sources, the group was intercepted while allegedly conducting arrests and presenting themselves as personnel of the Nigeria Forest Guard without proper authorisation.

The suspects are believed to have been operating under false identities when they were stopped by the troops.

Their activities reportedly raised suspicion, prompting the soldiers to intervene and subject them to preliminary questioning and searches.

During the operation, a round of 9mm ammunition and other items were reportedly recovered from the suspects. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the possession of the ammunition and the group’s claimed affiliation.

The 14 suspects are currently in military custody and are expected to undergo further interrogation and possible legal proceedings.

Security agencies have cautioned members of the public to be vigilant and verify the identity of individuals claiming to represent government security organisations.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security in the FCT and ensuring that individuals involved in impersonation or related criminal activities are brought to justice.
