Stop-and-search turns bloody in Edo as gunmen open fire on Police Inspector
A stop-and-search operation in Benin City, Edo State, turned tragic on Friday after gunmen shot dead a police inspector attached to the Ekiadolor Area Command.
The incident occurred around midday when officers flagged down a black, unregistered Lexus SUV with dark-tinted windows.
Despite repeated signals, the driver refused to stop, raising suspicion among the operatives.
Edo Police Command spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, said officers attempted to carry out further checks, but the situation quickly escalated.
According to him, one of the occupants of the SUV suddenly opened fire at close range, hitting the inspector, before the vehicle sped off. The officer died on the spot.
The attack has prompted swift action from the command.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a comprehensive investigation and launched a manhunt for the gunmen. All intelligence units and tactical teams have been activated to track the suspects.
Agbonika appealed to the public for useful information, especially sightings of the suspicious SUV, and urged residents to stay vigilant and report unusual movements through the police emergency lines.
Security has been reinforced across Edo State ahead of the festive season, with the police assuring residents of sustained efforts to safeguard lives and property.
