Tension in Osun as suspected thugs attack Aree of Iree’s palace hours to election
Suspected political thugs have allegedly attacked the palace of the Aree of Iree, Oba Muritala Oyelakin, less than 24 hours before the governorship election in Osun State.
The monarch disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Iree on Friday, saying the incident occurred around 2am.
According to him, two Sienna vehicles reportedly arrived at the palace, after which the occupants fired several shots into the air and later shot at the palace gate.
Oba Oyelakin said the attackers may have been prevented from gaining access to the palace because the lights were on within the premises.
He added that some people were also inside the palace at the time, observing prayers when the suspected assailants arrived.
According to him, he repeatedly switched the lights off and on to draw attention to the presence of people in the palace and scare the assailants.
“The attack occurred around 2 a.m.; the lights were on at the time because I was in a prayer session, with some people still present on the premises.
“I saw two Sienna vehicles; one of the assailants first shot into the air before firing at the gate. I repeatedly switched the lights off and on to give the impression that people were present and scared the attackers away.”
The monarch, who expressed concern over the incident, called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the attack and ensure that those responsible were arrested and brought to justice.
“I want to call on all security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure the perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice.”
