President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on prominent Nigerians, including the Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Osa Director, in recognition of their contributions to the country’s democratic evolution.

The award was announced during the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, where the President honoured about 50 individuals drawn from different sectors for their roles in the pro-democracy struggle that led to the end of military rule in Nigeria.

According to Tinubu, the recipients demonstrated courage, resilience and sacrifice during years of agitation for democratic governance, often at great personal risk.

He noted that many of the honourees endured persecution, imprisonment, exile and harassment in their efforts to restore civil rule and entrench democratic values in the country.

“Their sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms we enjoy today,” the President said in his nationwide address.

Osa Director was listed alongside other notable journalists, civil rights activists, political figures and retired military officers who played active roles in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.

The President stressed that the honours were not only a recognition of past struggles but also a reminder of the responsibility to strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the principles of justice, accountability and national unity.

Tinubu added that sustaining democracy requires continuous commitment from both leaders and citizens to ensure that the gains of past struggles are not eroded.

The full list of awardees is expected to be made public by the Federal Government in the coming days.
