Tinubu gives up salaries since taking office to Armed Forces Welfare Fund

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the creation of a dedicated welfare fund for Nigeria’s Armed Forces, pledging to donate all his salaries since assuming office as seed funding for the initiative.

The President made the announcement on the occasion of his 74th birthday, describing the move as a tribute to the courage and sacrifices of military personnel and their families.

“On this my 74th birthday, I celebrate the valiant men and women of our Armed Forces,” the President stated.

He directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to immediately set up a special account that will cater to serving personnel, those injured in active service, and families of fallen heroes, including widows, widowers, and children.

According to the President, the fund is designed to provide direct support to wounded soldiers, particularly those who have lost limbs, as well as dependants of personnel who died in the line of duty.

Tinubu emphasised that his decision to donate his salaries reflects a personal commitment to the welfare of the nation’s defenders, adding that the initiative would complement existing insurance and welfare schemes within the military.

He called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the fund once operational details are made public.

“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families. This is not charity. It is duty, and we will fulfil it,” he said.

Further details on the structure of the fund and contribution modalities are expected to be released by relevant authorities in the coming days.
