Troops strengthen harvest-season patrols, arrest two herders in Benue farmland
Troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE have intensified protection for farmers during the harvest season, arresting two herders found trespassing and destroying crops on a community farm in Makurdi, Benue State.
The incident occurred on 20 November 2025 during a routine patrol by OPWS troops stationed at Zongo Akiki.
The herders reportedly led their cattle into farmlands belonging to local residents, causing damage to crops. Quick action by the troops prevented further destruction and potential clashes between the herders and farmers.
The suspects are now in custody, facing further investigation and possible legal action.
Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE, praised the troops for their professionalism.
He urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands during disputes, warning that violence only worsens tensions and undermines peaceful coexistence.
He also reminded herders to follow the law and avoid criminal acts that threaten security.
Major General Gara reaffirmed the commitment of Operation WHIRL STROKE to protect farmlands and ensure a safe environment for legitimate businesses and agricultural activities.
