Two escape death as residential building collapses in Abuja
Two residents trapped inside a collapsed one-storey building in Kubwa 2/2, near Yellow Page in Abuja, have been rescued and taken to Kubwa General Hospital for treatment.
The victims are currently receiving medical attention and are said to be in stable condition.
The Head of Media and Public Relations of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday.
Isa said the victims were trapped on the ground floor of the residential building after the right section of the structure collapsed at about 11:30am.
She explained that the affected property consists of six blocks of flats, adding that most of the other occupants were away when the incident occurred.
According to her, the absence of the other residents at the time of the collapse helped to reduce the number of people who could have been trapped in the building.
She said the FEMD received a distress call at 11:38am and swiftly mobilised to the scene to extract the trapped victims. While the two residents were pulled out alive without fatalities, the collapse resulted in significant loss of personal belongings and household items, she added.
Isa said the Department of Development Control and the FCT Police Command also responded to the incident to secure the area and initiate investigations into the structural failure.
