FCTA demolishes structures on Abuja waterways (Photos)
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has intensified the demolition of buildings and other structures constructed on waterways and erosion paths across Abuja.
The move comes amid growing concerns over flooding in the nation’s capital, following a heavy downpour on August 16 that left residents stranded and submerged vehicles in several parts of the city.
Areas affected by the flash flood included Maitama, Wuse 2, Gudu, Lokogoma and other parts of Abuja.
In Wuse 2, parts of Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent were badly flooded, while the areas around Delight Event Centre in Gudu and Efab Estate in Lokogoma also recorded significant flooding.
The bridge linking Gaduwa and Durumi was also heavily flooded, leaving motorists stranded and disrupting movement.
Some vehicles were submerged or damaged by the floodwaters, while businesses in affected areas were forced to close.
A video shared by a resident showed floodwaters covering the Ebeano-Gudu road and the bridge connecting the two areas.
Following the incident, Nyesom Wike, minister of the FCT, ordered the immediate demolition of houses obstructing waterways in Maitama and other flood-prone areas of Abuja.
Wike issued the directive after inspecting areas affected by flooding in Maitama.
He said the demolition would begin immediately and continue until, irrespective of political activities or the status of the owners of the affected properties.
Last Tuesday, the FCTA began the demolition of houses and other structures built on designated water channels around Maitama.
However, when Very Nigerian visited the area on Monday, some of the structures earlier demolished were already being rebuilt.
In Wuye, FCTA officials were seen carrying out compliance operations and demolishing houses, fences and other structures identified as being built on waterways.
