UCL Action: PSV humbles Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid shine, as Lookman scores for Atalanta
Liverpool endured a crushing 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven at Anfield on Wednesday in their UEFA Champions League clash. The Merseyside side struggled defensively and failed to click offensively as the Dutch visitors scored twice in the second half.
Ivan Perisic opened the scoring for PSV, while Guus Til and Couhaib Driouech added further goals. Dominik Szoboszlai had briefly equalised for Liverpool before their second-half collapse.
The match swung early in PSV’s favour when a penalty was awarded for Virgil van Dijk’s handball, and Perisic calmly converted. Szoboszlai restored parity ten minutes later by finishing a rebound from Cody Gakpo’s saved shot.
However, PSV regained control as Til netted a precise finish on 56 minutes from Mauro Junior’s incisive pass. Driouech sealed the emphatic victory with a late brace, scoring in the 73rd minute and again in added time.
This defeat marks Liverpool’s fifth loss in eight matches and their second in the Champions League this season. They have also conceded three or more goals in their last three games for the first time since 1992.
Elsewhere, Arsenal continued their unbeaten run in the UCL with a 3-1 win over Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium despite injury setbacks. Jurrien Timber, Noni Madueke, and Gabriel Martinelli were on target for the Gunners, who are increasingly viewed as competition favourites.
Atalanta also enjoyed a strong night as Ademola Lookman starred in a 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, scoring the opener and assisting the second goal shortly after.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe dazzled with a four-goal masterclass as Real Madrid came from behind to edge Olympiakos 4-3 in Greece.
