UEFA cancels Spain vs Argentina finalissima scheduled in Qatar
UEFA has announced the cancellation of the ‘Finalissima’ clash between Euro 2024 champions Spain and reigning world champions Argentina, which was scheduled for March 27 in Qatar.
The European football governing body cited an inability to reach an agreement with Argentina on an alternative date and venue, necessitated by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
“It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar,” UEFA said in a statement.
The Finalissima, which pits the latest Copa America winners against the European champions, saw Argentina win the inaugural edition in 2022 by defeating Italy at Wembley Stadium in London. Later that year, Argentina, led by captain Lionel Messi, claimed the World Cup in Qatar.
The planned match against Spain would have marked the first encounter between Messi and teenage Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal, considered by many as Messi’s potential successor.
UEFA initially proposed hosting the game at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu, which Argentina rejected.
Subsequent suggestions included a two-legged fixture, first in Madrid on March 27 and the return in Buenos Aires before the 2028 Euros and Copa America, also turned down.
A final offer to stage a one-off match at a neutral European venue on March 27 or 30 was declined by Argentina, who stated they could only play on March 31.
“As a result, and to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled,” UEFA confirmed.
