2027: Wike rules out support for Fubara’s re-election, deepens Rivers political rift
The political battle ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State appears to be taking shape as former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has firmly ruled out supporting his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, for a second term.
Wike made the declaration during a pre-convention meeting with Rivers APC delegates at his Abuja residence, stressing that no amount of pressure or political persuasion would make him repeat what he described as the “mistake” of backing Fubara in 2023.
He dismissed speculations of reconciliation, stating that his past decision had taught him hard lessons. According to him, neither intimidation nor inducement would influence his stance going forward.
The minister attributed the ongoing political crisis in the state to what he termed betrayal and ingratitude, noting that the once strong alliance between him and Fubara has since collapsed, plunging the state into prolonged political tension.
Wike also cautioned politicians allegedly using his name to push their governorship ambitions, warning that such individuals were acting independently and should desist from linking him to their political moves. He advised his supporters to remain vigilant and avoid being misled by opportunistic actors.
In a veiled warning, Wike maintained that his political battles are not easily won, insisting that he would remain a formidable force in the state’s political landscape. He added that loyalty remains a key factor in his political engagements, emphasizing the need for leaders to appreciate those who supported their rise to power.
The minister further commended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, for their loyalty and resilience amid the ongoing crisis, noting that they endured hardship rather than compromise their political stance.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Finance and Administration at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Bomah Iyaye, has denied reports linking him to the 2027 governorship race or suggesting he had secured Wike’s endorsement.
He described such claims as false and misleading, reiterating his commitment to his current responsibilities.
Uncertainty, however, continues to surround the political future of Governor Fubara, particularly regarding his intention to seek re-election.
While his silence has fueled speculation, a source close to the governor dismissed claims that he had abandoned his second-term ambition, insisting that he remains a strong political figure with considerable backing at the national level.
The unfolding developments signal a deepening rift within Rivers politics, setting the stage for a potentially intense contest ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
