21 Kano Lawmakers, 8 Reps, 44 Chairmen pledge loyalty to Gov Yusuf, dump NNPP
The Governor formally notified the NNPP leadership through a letter to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale LGA.
Kano State Governor Abba K. Yusuf has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), effective Friday, January 23, 2026.
His defection comes alongside 21 members of the State Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government Chairmen.
Governor Yusuf announced his resignation in a letter to the NNPP Chairman of Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, citing deepening internal crises within the party.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the NNPP of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” he wrote, adding that the move follows persistent leadership disputes and ongoing legal challenges that have weakened party cohesion and widened divisions across the state and at the national level.
The governor said his decision was guided by public interest considerations, stressing that it was made in good faith, without ill will, and with a commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State.
Yusuf thanked the NNPP leadership and members for their support since 2022, acknowledging the platform the party provided him during his political journey.
