5.0-magnitude quake rocks Southeastern Turkey
A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck parts of southeastern Turkey early Saturday, with authorities confirming that no deaths, injuries or significant damage have been reported.
According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake occurred at 6:20 a.m. local time (0320 GMT) in the Battalgazi district of Malatya Province.
The tremor was felt across several neighbouring provinces, including Malatya, Elazig, Adiyaman, Tunceli and Sanliurfa.
In a statement, AFAD said there had been no adverse effects from the quake, adding that emergency response teams remain on the ground to monitor the situation.
“No adverse situation has been reported following the magnitude 5 earthquake that occurred at 6:20 am (0320 GMT) in the Battalgazi district, in Malatya province, and was felt in the provinces of Malatya, Elazig, Adiyaman, Tunceli and Sanliurfa. Our teams continue to work in the field,” the agency said.
Turkey is crisscrossed by several geological fault lines that have previously caused catastrophes in the country.
