The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested and returned to Turkey a 61-year-old Turkish national, Acar Huseyin, who fled his country after being convicted of fraud earlier this year.

In a statement on Tuesday, Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said Huseyin was sentenced by the Istanbul Anadolu High Criminal Court to 14 years, eight months, and 10 days in prison but fled Turkey to avoid serving his sentence.

He reportedly entered Nigeria via the Middle East.

Hundeyin added that in July 2025, INTERPOL NCB Ankara issued a Red Notice calling on member countries to locate and arrest the fugitive.

Acting on the notice, INTERPOL NCB Abuja carried out intelligence-led operations that resulted in Huseyin’s arrest in Abuja.

Following the completion of necessary documentation and cooperation with international partners, Huseyin was repatriated to Istanbul to begin his sentence.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the INTERPOL unit for their professionalism, emphasizing that Nigeria would not serve as a safe haven for fugitives or escaped convicts.

He reiterated the NPF’s commitment to international collaboration and supporting global efforts against transnational crime.
