Gombe, Borno, Yobe, two other states to face intermittent blackout as NISO begins upgrade

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced a scheduled outage on the Jos–Gombe 330kV transmission line affecting customers in Adamawa State, Gombe State, Bauchi State, Borno State, and Yobe State.

In a statement, the operator said the outage will run from April 9 to May 2, occurring every Thursday to Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

According to NISO, the disruption is required to facilitate the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre optic infrastructure along the transmission corridor.

The agency explained that the upgrade is part of broader efforts to improve grid operations through enhanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Energy Management Systems (EMS), and telecommunications capabilities.

NISO said the project is expected to strengthen real-time monitoring, fault detection, load balancing, and overall power delivery across the region.

During the maintenance period, electricity supply to the affected states will be temporarily routed through available 132kV transmission lines. However, the operator warned that limited capacity may lead to reduced power supply and occasional service interruptions.

The agency added that it is working closely with distribution companies in Jos and Yola, as well as the Transmission Company of Nigeria, to minimise disruptions during the upgrade period.

Upon completion, the project is expected to improve electricity reliability, enhance grid coordination, and support more efficient load management across the national grid.
