Xenophobia: Avoid crowd, monitor security, FG issues warnings to Nigerians in South Africa
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has advised Nigerian nationals living in South Africa to temporarily close their businesses and take safety precautions as xenophobic tensions escalate in parts of the country.
In a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM said the advisory followed a security circular from the Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg.
The commission noted that protests recorded in cities including East London, Cape Town, Durban, and KwaZulu-Natal have turned violent, leading to looting, destruction of property, and injuries.
According to the advisory, intelligence suggests that fresh demonstrations are planned in Gauteng Province between April 27 and April 29, with protesters demanding action over the presence of foreign nationals.
NiDCOM urged Nigerians to avoid protest areas, refrain from any confrontation with demonstrators, and monitor local media for security updates.
It also specifically advised business owners to close operations on April 27, marked as Freedom Day in South Africa, and possibly extend closures through April 28 and 29, warning that foreign-owned businesses are often targeted during unrest.
The commission reaffirmed that Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is engaging South African authorities in efforts to address the situation and ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens.
