All you need to know about NDC, Nigeria’s new political party, how it’s making waves

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is among Nigeria’s newest political parties, officially registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in early 2026.

Since its recognition, the party has quickly entered national political conversations, particularly as attention shifts toward the 2027 general elections.

Formation and legal journey

The NDC secured its registration on February 5, 2026, after a prolonged legal battle that began in 2017. Its approval followed a ruling by the Federal High Court directing INEC to recognise the party.

It was registered alongside the Democratic Leadership Alliance, placing both among parties that emerged through judicial intervention rather than fresh grassroots mobilisation.

The party is closely linked to former Bayelsa State governor and senator, Seriake Dickson, who is widely seen as Its founder.

Its early leadership includes Cleopas Zuwoghe as National Chairman and Ikenna Enekweizu as National Secretary, supported by other national officers handling various responsibilities.

In a major political development, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have reportedly joined the party, urging members to avoid internal disputes and focus on national development.

Also aligning with the party is Adamawa politician Aisha Binani, along with 17 members of the House of Representatives, further raising the party’s profile as a potential opposition platform.

Party structure

The NDC has moved to establish its structure ahead of its first national convention. It has appointed officials across key positions, including National Vice Chairmen representing all six geopolitical zones.

Pro-tem state chairmen have also been named across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, pending confirmation at the convention.

According to its promoters, the party was formed to promote accountability, structured governance, and long-term national planning.

Membership

Presenting itself as a new opposition platform, the NDC says it aims to attract Nigerians across political divides.

In a statement on its website, the party said, “We believe leadership must be measured by outcomes, not promises. Governance must be disciplined, transparent, and grounded in long-term national interest.”

The party describes its emergence as a “new direction” for Nigeria, arguing that despite the country’s potential, progress has been slowed by inconsistent planning, weak institutional accountability, and a growing disconnect between government and citizens.

Mission and goals

It says it aims to move away from short-term political decisions by focusing on data-driven policies that support national development.

It also highlights youth participation, inclusion of women, and electoral reforms as part of its core agenda.

The party claims to have built structures across all 774 local government areas, with a reported membership exceeding one million people.

It also operates a digital membership system to organise supporters, though these figures are still being independently assessed as expansion continues.

As part of its roadmap toward 2027, the NDC has launched nationwide congresses in May 2026 and fixed its inaugural national convention for May 9, 2026, in Abuja.

The convention is expected to ratify its constitution, confirm leadership positions, and define its electoral direction, with party primaries likely to follow shortly after.

For now, the NDC remains one of the most closely watched new entrants in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, with its true influence expected to unf

old in the build-up to the 2027 elections.
