BREAKING: Peter Obi, Kwankwaso officially join NDC, pick up membership cards
Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and his Kano State counterpart, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, in a significant political development that underscores ongoing opposition realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The two prominent political figures were received into the party on Sunday at its national secretariat in Abuja, marking the culmination of weeks of consultations and speculation surrounding their political future.
Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, had earlier announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress, citing persistent internal crises and unresolved legal disputes within the party.
Similarly, Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, had in recent days confirmed that he was engaged in wide-ranging consultations with various stakeholders, including leaders of the NDC, before finalising his decision.
Their formal entry into the NDC is widely viewed as a strategic move aimed at consolidating opposition forces and strengthening a potential coalition platform capable of challenging the ruling establishment in the next electoral cycle.
Political observers say the development could significantly reshape the dynamics of opposition politics, particularly if ongoing alliance discussions translate into a unified front ahead of 2027.
