“Peter Obi’s defection To NDC doesn’t threaten APC” — Yilwatda

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nantewe Yilwatda, has said the ruling party is not worried about the defection of Peter Obi from the ADC to the NDC.

Yilwatda made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja during the ongoing purchase and submission of APC nomination and expression of interest forms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the internal crises and defections rocking opposition parties have no effect on the APC.

“If someone defects from ADC to NDC or another opposition party, that does not affect APC. Let them sort out their problems. APC remains solid and we are moving forward with strong numbers,” he said.

The APC chairman also downplayed the resignation of about 18 National Assembly members from the ADC to the NDC, insisting the development posed no threat to the ruling party.

“None of those defecting is from our party. They are fishing from the same pond,” he added.

Yilwatda further claimed that the large turnout of aspirants purchasing APC nomination forms showed growing national acceptance of the party.

“Nigerians are happy with what APC is doing. They love and accept the party across all geopolitical zones,” he stated.

He also ruled out any extension of the deadline for the purchase and submission of forms, explaining that the party must comply with timelines provided in the Electoral Act.

“We would have loved to extend the time, but we are time-bound. The Electoral Act limits the timeframe for conducting primaries and submitting results,” he said.

The APC chairman added that new measures would be introduced during the screening exercise to reduce overcrowding and ensure smooth coordination of activities ahead of the party primaries.
