The Kwankwasiyya Movement has dismissed reports suggesting that its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, threatened to leave the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the alleged replacement of candidates in the party’s primaries.

Speaking to The Nation on Monday, the Movement’s spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammed, described the reports as “mere rumours,” insisting that neither Kwankwaso nor the group had raised any complaint against the party.

“The Kwankwasiyya Movement, and neither its leader, is complaining,” Mohammed said.

The clarification comes amid media reports alleging tension within the NDC following the substitution of some candidates earlier nominated by the Kwankwasiyya bloc, reportedly over claims of a breach of a power-sharing arrangement.

Mohammed maintained that the party’s primaries were conducted on May 29 in line with the Electoral Act and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines, adding that the outcomes were duly affirmed.

According to him, stakeholders had earlier agreed on a consensus arrangement where necessary, and candidates were submitted without internal disagreement.

He further noted that Kwankwaso had not communicated any grievance to the movement regarding the development, stressing that the party leadership was better placed to address internal issues within the NDC.

The clarification is coming against the backdrop of growing political realignments and speculation within opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
