Kano Politics: Gawuna finalizes move to join ADC as governorship ticket beckons
The 2023 Kano State governorship candidate of the APC, Nasiru Gawuna, is reportedly on the verge of leaving the NDC for the ADC as negotiations between his camp and the party’s leadership in Kano reach an advanced stage.
As exclusively reported by Very Nigerian days ago, discussions are centred on securing the ADC governorship ticket for Gawuna ahead of the 2027 election, alongside political accommodation for several of his loyalists seeking State Assembly and National Assembly seats.
Kano ADC Chairman, Musa Ungogo, confirmed that Gawuna initiated the talks through emissaries, dismissing claims that the party had approached the former deputy governor.
“The story being circulated that the ADC approached Gawuna is not correct. It was Gawuna who approached us. He sent a delegation to meet us, and discussions have been ongoing since then,” Ungogo said.
According to him, members of Gawuna’s delegation requested that he be adopted as the ADC’s consensus governorship candidate for 2027, arguing that his political influence across Kano State would strengthen the party’s electoral prospects.
The ADC leadership has reportedly requested a formal written submission detailing the demands before taking a final decision.
The development comes just months after Gawuna left the APC and later joined the NDC alongside Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Upon joining the NDC, Gawuna was said to have accepted the Kano Central Senatorial ticket, while Aminu Gwarzo emerged as the party’s consensus governorship candidate.
His potential exit is expected to deepen political realignments in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections and could further affect the balance of power among opposition parties in the state.
