BREAKING: INEC announces Oyebanji as winner of Ekiti governorship poll

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been re-elected as Governor of Ekiti State after recording a sweeping victory in Saturday’s governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Oyebanji winner in the early hours of Sunday after he polled 319,224 votes, defeating his closest challengers, Olumayokun Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 40,533 votes, and Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who garnered 12,872 votes.

The Returning Officer for the election and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, announced the result at the State Collation Centre in Ado-Ekiti.

Declaring the result, Oladiji said Oyebanji satisfied all constitutional requirements and was therefore returned elected for another four-year term.

The APC candidate dominated the poll across all 16 local government areas of the state, securing commanding victories in key strongholds, including Ado-Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun, Ekiti West, Ikole, Moba and Oye councils.

A major setback for the opposition came as PDP candidate Oluyede lost his own Efon Local Government Area to the incumbent governor, with APC polling 8,742 votes against PDP’s 2,051 votes.

INEC disclosed that out of 988,251 registered voters, 384,940 voters were accredited, while 375,777 valid votes were recorded in the election.

The outcome cements Oyebanji’s political dominance in Ekiti and makes him one of the few governors in the state’s history to secure re-election with a wide margin, strengthening the APC’s hold on the South-West state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
