You have failed on your promises, follow Starmer’s footsteps and resign” — Peter Obi tells Tinubu

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, citing what he described as failures in governance and drawing parallels with the resignation announcement of Keir Starmer.

In a statement posted on his X account on Monday, Obi said Starmer’s decision to step down reflected the principle of political accountability in democratic societies and should serve as a lesson for leaders who fail to deliver on their promises.

According to Obi, Starmer’s resignation followed growing public dissatisfaction over economic challenges, rising living costs and unfulfilled campaign commitments.

The former Anambra governor recalled that before the 2015 general election, Tinubu had repeatedly called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over insecurity and economic hardship, particularly following the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.

Obi also referenced promises Tinubu made during the 2023 presidential campaign, including commitments to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption, strengthen security and improve the welfare of Nigerians.

He argued that conditions had worsened since then, pointing to persistent power shortages, increasing insecurity, kidnappings and deepening economic hardship.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made several promises, including improved electricity supply. He also challenged the electorate not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those commitments,” Obi stated.

The opposition figure further claimed that sectors such as infrastructure, transportation and anti-corruption efforts had recorded setbacks under the current administration.

“We are in the worst possible condition,” Obi said, insisting that resignation would help entrench accountability and responsibility in public office.

“I therefore join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” he added.

Obi maintained that such a step would help build a political culture based on accountability and reinforce the principle that public office is a trust rather than an entitlement.
