Tinubu approves Ibom Deep-Sea Port, Victor Attah Airport upgrade to international status
President Bola Tinubu has approved the proposed Ibom Deep-Sea Port and the upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport in Akwa Ibom State to full international airport status.
The President announced the approvals on Friday while addressing residents of the state during a rally organised in his honour at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Tinubu’s announcement followed a request by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, who had called on the Federal Government to support the establishment of the deep-sea port as part of efforts to expand the state’s economic and investment opportunities.
Responding to the appeal, the President declared his approval of the proposed project.
“I heard from my friend, my governor, my pastor, on behalf of the people and leadership of Akwa Ibom, a request for Ibom’s deep-sea port. Ibom Deep-Sea Port. It’s approved,” Tinubu said.
The approval comes after Tinubu made a similar promise during his 2023 presidential campaign rally at the same stadium, where he pledged to facilitate the establishment of a deep-sea port in the state.
At the time, he cited the Lekki Deep Sea Port, which was developed during his tenure as Lagos State Governor, as a model for the proposed Akwa Ibom project.
The President also approved the proposed upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport to international status, although further details on the implementation and timelines for the two projects were not provided in the announcement.
The development follows Governor Eno’s pledge that Akwa Ibom would deliver two million votes for Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 if the Federal Government approved and facilitated the delivery of the Ibom Deep-Sea Port project.
During his address, Tinubu also urged eligible Nigerians in the state to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate actively in the electoral process.
