2027: Tinubu is going, DSS just wasting their time – Sowere

Publisher and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has said security agencies are wasting their time over his prosecution, insisting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will eventually leave office.

Sowore made the remark on Wednesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he was brought under heavy security escort from the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The activist likened the current situation to the era of former military ruler Sani Abacha, arguing that previous governments also used state institutions against critics before leaving power.

The court premises witnessed a strong security presence, with several lawyers, journalists and court users reportedly complaining that they were denied access to the courtroom because of restrictions imposed by security operatives.

Sowore is currently being held in custody following an order by Justice Mohammed Garba Umar, who on Monday directed that he remain in prison pending the determination of his application seeking to challenge the revocation of his bail and the issuance of a bench warrant against him.

The case arose from charges filed by the Department of State Services over an online publication allegedly made by Sowore.

According to the DSS, the activist violated provisions of Nigeria’s cybercrime law through posts on his X and Facebook accounts in which he allegedly referred to President Tinubu as “a criminal.”

Watch video from the court:

The agency is prosecuting him on allegations of cyberbullying and making statements it considers false and injurious to the reputation of the President.

The matter remains before the court as legal arguments continue over the validity of the charges, the revocation of Sowore’s bail, and his continued detention
