Peter Obi files N5bn defamation suit against former ally Kenneth Okonkwo
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has filed a ₦5 billion defamation lawsuit against his former ally and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, over allegations of fraud and extortion.
The suit was filed on Thursday at the Onitsha Judicial Division of the Anambra State High Court.
The legal action follows comments made by Okonkwo during an appearance on a Channels Television programme, where he alleged that Obi defrauded and extorted ₦10 million from NDC House of Representatives aspirants and manipulated the outcome of the party’s primary elections.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding that Okonkwo retract the allegations, tender a public apology, and pay ₦5 billion in damages or face legal action.
However, Okonkwo, through his lawyer, V.I. Uma, in a letter dated June 16, maintained his position, insisting that his comments were based on complaints and briefs allegedly received from NDC aspirants who claimed they were defrauded and extorted by the party’s South-East caucus, which he said was led by Obi.
With the filing of the lawsuit, the dispute between the two former political associates is now set to be determined by the court.
