TCN announces power outage in Kano, four other northern states for grid maintenance
Residents and businesses in Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Yobe states should expect a temporary power outage on Sunday as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) carries out planned maintenance to strengthen the national electricity grid.
The company disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, adding that the planned outage will also affect Gazaoua in the Niger Republic.
According to TCN, the temporary disruption is necessary to allow scheduled maintenance at the Kumbotso 330-kilovolt transmission substation, where upgrade works are ongoing to improve the reliability of electricity supply and increase transmission capacity.
The maintenance will enable TCN’s contractor to continue the upgrade of the 330kV Bus II jumpers and replace existing 350mm² conductors with higher-capacity 800mm² conductors as part of efforts to reinforce the transmission network.
As a result, electricity distribution companies serving the affected areas will be unable to receive power for onward distribution during the maintenance period.
“Consequently, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), as well as parts of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC), will be unable to off-take power for distribution to customers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states, as well as Azare in Bauchi State, Nguru in Yobe State, and Gazaoua in the Niger Republic,” the statement said.
TCN assured customers that the temporary disruption is necessary to complete critical infrastructure upgrades designed to enhance the stability and reliability of electricity supply in the affected regions.
