France miss out on Brazil, Germany’s World Cup record after Spain defeat
The defeat ended France’s bid to become only the third nation to reach three consecutive FIFA World Cup finals.
France missed the chance to equal a FIFA World Cup record jointly held by Brazil and Germany after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Spain in the semi-finals of the 2026 tournament on Tuesday.
Spain booked their place in the final with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal in the first half and Pedro Porro after the break, securing a deserved victory over Didier Deschamps’ side at Dallas Stadium.
The defeat ended France’s bid to become only the third nation to reach three consecutive FIFA World Cup finals.
Germany achieved the feat by reaching the finals of the 1982, 1986 and 1990 World Cups, while Brazil matched the record by qualifying for the 1994, 1998 and 2002 finals.
France lifted the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after defeating Croatia 4-2 in the final before returning to the final in Qatar in 2022, where they lost to Argentina on penalties.
However, their semi-final defeat to Spain at the 2026 World Cup ended their hopes of matching the historic record held by Brazil and Germany.
