Jonathan holds closed-door talks with Turaki-led PDP faction in Abuja amid presidential bid silence

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, reigniting speculation over his possible role in the 2027 presidential election.

The meeting comes months after the faction adopted Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the next general election, despite the former president not publicly declaring any intention to contest.

Leaders of the faction visited Jonathan at his Abuja residence in what party insiders described as a strategic engagement focused on the group’s political future and preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Photographs from the meeting showed Jonathan receiving senior members of the faction, including its chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, alongside other party leaders.

However, neither Jonathan nor the Turaki-led PDP faction disclosed details of the discussions, and no official statement was issued after the meeting.

The development has renewed attention on Jonathan’s political future amid persistent calls by supporters and political groups urging him to seek another term as president.

The former president has so far maintained a cautious stance on the matter.

Earlier in May, Jonathan was approached by a coalition of supporters who appealed to him to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Responding to the request, he said any decision on a presidential bid would require broad consultations across the country.

“You are asking me to come and contest the next election. The presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely,” Jonathan said.

He stressed that such a decision could not be made hastily.

“I will consult. I cannot just wake up and say I want to be the president of Nigeria again. But I am telling you that I will consult. If there is a need to, I will wait,” he added.

The Turaki-led PDP faction formally adopted Jonathan as its presidential candidate during a special national convention held in Abuja in May.

Although Jonathan was absent from the convention, delegates unanimously endorsed him as the faction’s flagbearer for the 2027 presidential election, with a certificate of return received on his behalf.

Party leaders described the former president as a unifying figure capable of restoring confidence in governance.

Since the endorsement, Jonathan has remained silent on whether he will accept the nomination or officially enter the 2027 presidential race.
