Kenneth Okonkwo alleges plot to rig 2027 election over Showunmi’s wife’s INEC appointment
Lawyer and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has raised concerns over the reported appointment of Bamidele Sowunmi’s wife as Head of Operations at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging that the development could undermine confidence in the credibility of the 2027 general election.
Okonkwo made the remarks while speaking with ARISE News journalist Charles Aniagolu on Prime Time, where he questioned the implications of the appointment for the commission’s independence and impartiality.
He alleged that the appointment suggested the All Progressives Congress (APC) had already rigged the election before the polls, although he did not establish evidence of electoral manipulation in the remarks provided.
“You cannot be a judge in your own case,” Okonkwo said, arguing that the appointment raised concerns about a possible conflict of interest.
He further claimed that having Sowunmi’s wife in the position would effectively place Sowunmi himself in charge of INEC’s electoral operations.
Okonkwo’s comments have brought attention to questions surrounding impartiality, transparency and public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the allegations of advance rigging remain Okonkwo’s claims and should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence. The circumstances of the reported appointment and any potential conflict of interest would need to be independently examined.
