WAFCON 2026: Malawi pull off historic upset, beat Nigeria’s Super Falcons 3-2
Malawi produced one of the biggest upsets in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) history on Tuesday, defeating defending champions Nigeria 3-1 in their Group C clash at the 2026 tournament.
The victory marked Malawi’s first-ever win at the competition, with the Scorchers making history in their debut appearance at the continental showpiece.
The Malawians had been widely tipped to struggle against the Super Falcons, Africa’s most successful women’s national team and reigning champions.
However, Malawi defied expectations with a spirited display, securing a famous 3-1 victory at the final whistle in Rabat.
The result handed the debutants a dream start to their WAFCON campaign while dealing a major blow to Nigeria’s title defence.
