AC Milan Legend Franco Baresi passes away at 66
Former AC Milan captain and club icon Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66.
The Serie A giants confirmed his passing in a statement released on Friday, paying tribute to one of the greatest players in the club’s history.
In its statement, AC Milan expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying: “The history of AC Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi.”
“His example and profound impact, like his number 6 shirt, will forever be an integral and fundamental part of the Club’s DNA and journey.
“The condolences AC Milan extends to Franco Baresi’s entire family are the same that every Rossoneri fan offers to themselves in such a difficult hour.”
Baresi underwent surgery for a lung nodule in 2025, but was one of the last torchbearers to carry the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
Baresi spent his entire professional playing career with AC Milan, becoming one of the club’s most celebrated defenders and captains. Widely regarded as one of football’s finest defenders, he played a pivotal role in the club’s domestic and European successes and left an enduring legacy at the San Siro.
