AFC backs UEFA, CONCACAF over FIFA world cup commercial plan
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has thrown its support behind UEFA and CONCACAF over growing concerns about FIFA’s proposal to sell a stake in the commercial operations of the FIFA World Cup.
The AFC made its position known on Friday, joining the two continental football bodies in questioning the plan, which has raised worries about the future management and business structure of the world’s biggest football tournament.
The confederation’s backing adds to the pressure on FIFA as discussions continue over the proposed sale of part of the World Cup’s business operations.
“The AFC stands in solidarity with UEFA and CONCACAF in expressing serious concerns over FIFA’s proposal to introduce private investment into FIFA’s flagship competitions,” the Kuala Lumpur-based body said in a statement.
“The fact that the situation has reached the point where the real possibility of a FIFA World Cup boycott has entered public discourse should concern everyone who cares about the future of our game,” said the AFC, which represents 47 member nations, including Australia, China, Japan and Saudi Arabia.
