Five things to know about Yekini Idaiyi, new Edo Assembly Speaker

Hon. Yekini Idaiyi, representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, has emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku.

Idaiyi’s emergence marks a major return to the leadership of the Edo legislature for a politician who previously served as Deputy Speaker before being removed from office in 2020.

Here are five things to know about the new Speaker:

1. He represents Akoko-Edo II Constituency

Yekini Idaiyi is a member of the Edo State House of Assembly, where he represents Akoko-Edo II Constituency. He is a politician from Edo State with years of experience in the state’s political space.

2. He previously served as Deputy Speaker

Before becoming Speaker, Idaiyi held the position of Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly. He assumed the role in June 2019 and served until August 2020.

3. He was impeached as Deputy Speaker in 2020

Idaiyi’s tenure as Deputy Speaker ended in August 2020 when he was removed from office by lawmakers. Roland Asoro, representing Orhionmwon II Constituency, was later elected to replace him.

His removal followed political disagreements surrounding his support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate during the 2020 Edo governorship election.

4. He returned to the Assembly leadership as Speaker

Several years after his removal as Deputy Speaker, Idaiyi has now risen to the highest leadership position in the Edo Assembly.

His emergence followed Agbebaku’s resignation as Speaker. Deputy Speaker Jonathan Ibhamawu presided over plenary after the resignation, during which Idaiyi was nominated and subsequently sworn in as Speaker.

5. His emergence comes amid leadership changes in the Assembly

Idaiyi’s election comes amid fresh political developments within the Edo State House of Assembly.

Agbebaku’s resignation followed reported internal moves against his leadership, although the exact circumstances surrounding his resignation were not immediately clear.
