The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its suspended former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, deepening the political crisis that has continued to rock the state legislature.

The lawmakers carried out the impeachment process on Monday, effectively removing Agbebaku from the position he previously occupied as Speaker of the Assembly.

The development comes amid an ongoing dispute within the Edo State House of Assembly over its leadership and other internal matters.

Very Nigerian reported that Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, had, on Monday, August 17, 2026, resigned his position as the Speaker of the House. Yekini Idaiye, the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo 1, was then elected in his place as the new Speaker.
