Planning a trip to Nigeria? Learning a few words and expressions in Nigerian Pidgin English could make your experience easier, more interesting and more memorable.

Nigerian Pidgin is widely spoken across the country and is commonly used in informal conversations, markets, transport, social gatherings and everyday interactions. Although English remains Nigeria’s official language, making an effort to use a few Pidgin expressions can help visitors connect with locals and better understand the country’s vibrant culture.

You do not need to become fluent. A handful of common expressions can be enough to break the ice, ask for help or start a friendly conversation.

1. Greetings and Introductions

Greetings are an easy way to start a conversation and make a good first impression.

“How you dey?”
Meaning: How are you?

“I dey fine, thank you.”
Meaning: I am fine, thank you.

“Wetin be your name?”
Meaning: What is your name?

“My name na [your name].”
Meaning: My name is [your name].

Another popular expression is “Wetin dey happen?”, which can be used casually to ask what is going on or how things are.

2. Asking for Directions

If you are visiting an unfamiliar city or neighbourhood, a few simple expressions can come in handy.

“Wia dis place dey?”
Meaning: Where is this place?

“How I go take reach [place]?”
Meaning: How do I get to [place]?

“E far?”
Meaning: Is it far?

You can combine these expressions with the name of your destination when asking someone for directions.

3. Shopping and Bargaining

Bargaining is common in many Nigerian markets, although whether you should negotiate depends on the type of shop or seller.

“How much be dis?”
Meaning: How much is this?

“E too cost.”
Meaning: It is too expensive.

“You fit reduce am?”
Meaning: Can you reduce the price?

A friendly approach is usually better than being overly aggressive when negotiating.

4. Ordering Food and Drinks

Nigeria is known for its diverse and flavourful cuisine, and trying local dishes is an important part of the travel experience.

“I wan chop [food].”
Meaning: I want to eat [food].

“Give me water.”
Meaning: Please give me water.

“Dis food sweet well well.”
Meaning: This food is very delicious.

The expression “well well” is often used for emphasis, so the last phrase can also convey that the food tastes really good.

5. Socialising and Making Friends

Pidgin is particularly useful in relaxed social situations.

“You sabi dance?”
Meaning: Do you know how to dance?

“Make we go play.”
Meaning: Let us go and have some fun/play.

“I like your style.”
Meaning: I like your style.

These simple expressions can help start conversations and make interactions feel more informal and friendly.

6. Showing Appreciation and Apologising

Politeness is important everywhere, and a few expressions can help you handle everyday interactions.

“Thank you.”
This is commonly used just as it is in standard English.

“No vex.”
Meaning: Please don’t be angry / Sorry.

“I beg.”
Meaning: Please. It can also be used when making a polite request.

7. Useful Expressions in an Emergency

Visitors should also know how to communicate if they need urgent assistance.

“Help me!”
Meaning: Help me!

“I no well.”
Meaning: I am not feeling well.

“Call police.”
Meaning: Call the police.

In a serious emergency, visitors should also use clear standard English where necessary and contact the appropriate emergency service.

More Pidgin Expressions to Know

As you become more comfortable, you may hear several other expressions in everyday conversations.

“No wahala.” — No problem.

“Abeg.” — Please / I beg you.

“Wetin?” — What?

“I no understand.” — I don’t understand.

“Oya.” — Come on / okay / let’s go, depending on the context.

“How far?” — What’s up? / How are you?

The meaning of some Pidgin expressions can change depending on the situation, tone and context, so visitors should listen carefully to how locals use them.

Why Learning Pidgin Can Improve Your Nigerian Experience

Learning a few Nigerian Pidgin expressions is more than simply memorising translations. It can give visitors an opportunity to interact more naturally with people and experience everyday Nigerian culture from a different perspective.

Whether you are buying something at a market, asking for directions, ordering food or making new friends, a simple “How you dey?” can be an easy way to start a conversation.

Visitors should also remember that Nigeria is linguistically diverse. Pidgin is widely understood, particularly in many urban areas, but it is not the only language spoken in the country. English and numerous indigenous languages are used across different communities.

The goal is not to speak perfect Pidgin. Even making an honest effort to learn a few expressions can make everyday interactions more enjoyable.

So, before your next trip to Nigeria, learn a few phrases, practise the pronunciation and do not be afraid to use them. You may discover that a little Pidgin can go a long way in making your Nigerian adventure more memorable.
