Atiku will sign agreement with Nigerians, reveal petrol price before taking office on May 29 — Nwosu

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralph Nwosu, has said the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, will enter into a formal agreement with Nigerians detailing his proposed economic policies, including his plan for petrol pricing.

Nwosu said Atiku would make specific commitments on the price of petrol before assuming office if elected president in the 2027 general election.

The former ADC chairman disclosed this on Arise Television’s Daybreak on Thursday while discussing Atiku’s proposal for a targeted fuel subsidy.

According to Nwosu, the agreement, which he described as a “contract” with Nigerians, would contain clear and measurable commitments on petrol prices and other aspects of Atiku’s economic agenda.

“Atiku will sign a contract. We will soon launch our campaign proper. We are just beginning the bonfire,” Nwosu said.

He explained that Atiku would specifically inform Nigerians of the expected cost of petrol under his administration, insisting that the candidate’s promises would be backed by clearly defined plans.

“We will soon launch it, and Atiku will sign a contract with the Nigerian people. And in signing that contract, he will tell them specifically that by May 29th, this will be the cost of fuel and this is how it will go,” he said.

Nwosu said the ADC campaign team was already developing policies and programmes that Atiku would implement during the early stages of his administration if elected.

He disclosed that work was also ongoing on a programme outlining the administration’s priorities for its first 100 days in office.

“Atiku’s campaign is already sitting down to work on his first 100th day in office, so that we don’t go ahead making reckless statements,” he said.

Atiku has repeatedly said he would introduce a targeted and capped fuel subsidy if elected, arguing that the intervention would help reduce the cost of living and restore Nigerians’ purchasing power.

The former vice president has also clarified that his proposal is not a return to the previous import-subsidy system, but a temporary intervention aimed at supporting domestic refining and production until market conditions can sustain affordable petrol prices without government support.

The subsidy debate has become one of the major economic issues ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the Federal Government and several petroleum industry stakeholders opposing a return to the previous subsidy regime.

Nwosu’s comments indicate that the ADC intends to make specific economic commitments a major component of Atiku’s campaign as the party prepares for the formal commencement of its nationwide campaign.
