Fire breaks out at Abuja train station, no casualties recorded
A minor fire broke out at the Idu Train Station in Abuja on Wednesday evening, damaging some electrical installations but causing no loss of life.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), which confirmed the incident on Thursday, said the fire had been brought under control and did not affect Abuja-Kaduna train services.
The NRC Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, said the incident occurred in the station’s low-voltage electrical room.
He assured passengers that train operations along the Abuja-Kaduna route remained normal despite the fire incident.
Unyimadu said the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on September 9 and was promptly contained by maintenance personnel.
He said preliminary inspection showed that some electrical supply cables connected to the control panels were damaged.
The NRC spokesperson, however, said the station’s alternative solar power system was not affected.
He added that power had been temporarily restored to the lifts and escalators, with five of the six facilities currently operational.
“Importantly, the incident has no effect on Abuja-Kaduna Train Service operations, and scheduled train services will continue as normal,” Unyimadu stated.
He said the NRC technical team was conducting further assessment to determine the cause of the incident and permanently restore the affected installations.
Unyimadu added that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, had also been informed to provide the necessary technical support and intervention.
