JUST IN: Two kidnapped FUTO students freed from captivity
Two female students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), who were abducted on Sunday, have regained their freedom.
The students were reportedly kidnapped along the road between the university and Ihiagwa community in Imo State.
Confirming their release in a statement on Friday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Orakwe Ezugwu, said the students had been reunited with the institution and were receiving medical and psychological care.
“The students are currently receiving medicare and psychological support in FUTO Medical Centre,” Ezugwu stated.
The university did not disclose further details about how the students regained their freedom or whether any arrests had been made in connection with the incident.
His words: “The Management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, has confirmed the safe release of the two female students, who were abducted during a security incident on campus on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
“The students are currently receiving medical care and psychological support at the University Medical Centre.
“The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.N.S. Dozie, has visited the students and interacted with them.”
While commending the police and other security agencies “for their prompt intervention”, FUTO management also assured students, staff, parents, and the University community that “additional security measures are being sustained in collaboration with relevant security agencies”.
Ezugwu then urged members of the University community to remain calm and vigilant, and promptly report any suspicious activity.
