Six arraigned over alleged defilement, sexual assault in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned six suspects before the Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka over separate allegations involving defilement, sexual assault, child abuse, assault and alleged unlawful procurement of abortion involving minors.

The suspects were arraigned on Thursday after the police concluded investigations into their respective cases.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, saying the arraignment followed investigations into the allegations against the suspects.

Ikenga said, “One of the suspects includes Chinedu Chiekwu, male, of Umuoli Village, who was arraigned over the alleged defilement of an 11-year-old child on September 6, 2026.

“Also arraigned was Sunday Anele, over an allegation of engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, which allegedly resulted in pregnancy.

“Ugochukwu Okereke was arraigned over an allegation of luring a 13-year-old girl to a nearby bush and sexually assaulting her.

“Similarly, Ebuka Nwachukwu was arraigned over an allegation of luring a six-year-old child into his room at Okpoko and sexually abusing her.

“The fifth suspect, Ogechi Ofoma, female, of Awada, Obosi, was arraigned over an allegation of using a heated kitchen knife to inflict multiple injuries on her five-year-old daughter, Oluebube Ofoma.

“The sixth suspect, Obianuju Okafor, female, was arraigned over an allegation relating to the unlawful procurement of abortion for her 15-year-old daughter.”

Providing an update on the 36-year-old woman who was allegedly seen engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct involving her child, Ikenga said the command had investigated the case and forwarded the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for necessary legal action.

“The suspect is currently in police custody, pending further proceedings,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons from sexual abuse, exploitation, violence and other forms of harm.

Ama further assured that the command would continue to ensure that victims and survivors were treated with dignity, sensitivity and appropriate protection throughout the investigative and legal process.
