Nigeria has secured a three-year seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council after receiving 172 votes in an election conducted by the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
The Federal Government announced the development in a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi.
According to the ministry, Nigeria’s new tenure will begin on January 1, 2027, and end on December 31, 2029.
Nigeria was elected alongside 14 other countries to serve on the council for the three-year period.
Nigeria secured 172 of the 181 votes cast in the election, with the government describing the outcome as a demonstration of support from UN member states for the country’s candidature.
The Human Rights Council comprises 47 member states and is mandated to promote and protect human rights worldwide while encouraging international cooperation on related issues.
Reacting to the outcome, the Federal Government thanked the countries that supported Nigeria’s bid and pledged to contribute to the council’s work through dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect.
It also expressed its readiness to collaborate with other members on initiatives aimed at protecting human dignity, advancing justice and safeguarding fundamental freedoms.
