BREAKING: Defence Minister Badaru resigns, cites health challenges
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has stepped down from office with immediate effect, citing health-related concerns, Very Nigerian gathers.
His resignation was formally communicated in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The President has accepted the decision, according to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who described Abubakar’s service as “noteworthy” and appreciated his contributions to national security management.
A replacement is expected to be unveiled shortly.
Presidency sources indicate that President Tinubu may transmit the name of a new Minister of Defence to the Senate before the end of the week, in line with constitutional requirements.
Abubakar, 63, served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before joining President Tinubu’s cabinet on August 21, 2023.
His exit comes at a particularly delicate moment for the administration, which is currently grappling with escalating security challenges across the North-West and North-Central regions.
The resignation also follows President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, a move that has triggered heightened counterterrorism and anti-kidnapping operations nationwide.
The President is expected to announce his successor soon.
