BREAKING: Tinubu names Gen. Christopher Musa as new Defence Minister
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the new Minister of Defence, following the resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar on Monday.
The nomination was formally conveyed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio in a letter from the President, who expressed confidence in General Musa’s capacity to strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture.
General Musa, who will turn 58 on December 25, is a highly decorated military officer and former Chief of Defence Staff, a role he held from 2023 until October 2025. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering, which he won in 2012.
Born in Sokoto in 1967, Musa obtained his primary and secondary education in the state before attending the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria. He proceeded to the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1986, graduating five years later with a Bachelor of Science degree and earning his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army.
Over the course of his career, General Musa has held several key command and staff appointments, including General Staff Officer 1, Training and Operations at Headquarters 81 Division; Commanding Officer of the 73 Battalion; and Assistant Director, Operational Requirements, Department of Army Policy and Plans. He also served as Infantry Representative and Training Team Member at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army Armour Corps.
In 2019, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff, Training and Operations at the Infantry Centre and Corps. He later commanded Sector 3 of Operation Lafiya Dole and Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad region.
By 2021, he had risen to the position of Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, before his appointment as Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps. President Tinubu named him Chief of Defence Staff in 2023, a role he held until late 2025.
In announcing his nomination, President Tinubu said he believed General Musa’s wealth of operational and administrative experience would serve the Ministry of Defence and the nation effectively.
The letter was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
