‘Fuel was N195 before you assumed office, now it’s N1,400, don’t blame opposition’ – Abati tackles Tinubu
Arise Television anchor, Reuben Abati, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for blaming opposition parties for hunger and poverty in Nigeria.
Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Monday, Abati questioned the President’s position, pointing to the increase in petrol prices since Tinubu assumed office.
Abati noted that petrol sold for about N195 per litre when Tinubu took office but now costs around N1,400 per litre.
The journalist’s comments followed Tinubu’s remarks at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna State on Saturday, where the President blamed the opposition for the country’s economic challenges.
“I hear my opponents talking about hunger and poverty. Who created it? They did. They created hunger, they created poverty. We are trying to eradicate it,” Tinubu said.
Reacting, Abati said the APC has been in power since 2015, and President Tinubu is now in his fourth year, stating that the opposition cannot be responsible for hunger in 2026 when they are not in power.
According to him, the alleged present hunger was due to the policies of this government which include removal of fuel subsidy and devaluation of the naira.
“You met the price of fuel at about N195, but now fuel is N1400 to N1500 per litre. That rise has caused food prices to go up. Bag of rice, garri, beans have all increased,” Abati said.
He said when Tinubu took over, garri was around N500 per paint, but now it is N2500, urging the President to stop blaming the opposition and focus on how to reduce the cost of living for Nigerians who are complaining.
