INEC bows to pressure, makes preliminary Voters’ Register available online for public inspection
The commission said it would upload the register, which was previously displayed physically at Registration Areas nationwide, to its online platform to enable more Nigerians to inspect the document.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to publish the Preliminary Register of Voters online following concerns from Nigerians and other stakeholders over public access to the register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission said it would upload the register, which was previously displayed physically at Registration Areas nationwide, to its online platform to enable more Nigerians to inspect the document.
INEC disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee.
According to the commission, the physical display of the Preliminary Register of Voters took place across the country from October 9 to 15, 2026, in line with Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026.
The exercise was intended to allow registered voters to verify their personal details and submit claims or objections as provided by law.
However, following concerns raised by members of the public and other stakeholders about the need for online access, INEC said it had decided to make the same register available on its digital platform.
The commission said the move was aimed at improving accessibility, promoting transparency and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.
“The Commission has taken note of the concerns expressed by Nigerians and other stakeholders regarding the desirability of making the Register accessible through its online platform in addition to the physical display already conducted,” the statement said.
INEC added that it was still processing claims and objections submitted during the physical display exercise ahead of the certification and publication of the final register.
The commission announced that the Final Register of Voters for the 2027 general elections would be published on December 15, 2026.
It urged Nigerians and other stakeholders to continue engaging with the electoral process, reiterating its commitment to transparency, accountability and compliance with the Electoral Act, 2026.
Registered voters can access the preliminary register through INEC’s designated online platform: https://display.inecnigeria.org.
