Trump directs full U.S. Congressional probe into alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria
President Donald Trump has directed the Republican-led House Appropriations Committee to open a far-reaching congressional investigation into allegations of widespread persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
The disclosure was made by U.S. Congressman Riley M. Moore, who announced in a post on his verified X account that Trump issued the instruction following mounting reports claiming that thousands of Nigerian Christians have suffered attacks, discrimination and pressure on account of their religious identity.
Moore said the committee had already begun preliminary inquiries into the claims, but Trump’s latest order would significantly expand the scope and depth of their work.
He added that the committee is preparing to convene a high-level roundtable involving security experts, human rights groups and religious leaders to gain a clearer understanding of the security challenges and alleged violations of religious freedom in different parts of the country.
The development comes amid renewed global attention on Nigeria’s security situation, especially in communities where faith-based attacks have been repeatedly reported.
